21-Time Grand Slam Champion
6-Time Grand Slam Champion
Growing up in Southern California, Lindsay Davenport only dreamed of competing in the Olympics as her father did. Today, she’s a 3 time grand slam champion, Olympic gold medalist and has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Now the former champion is here to teach you the fundamentals needed to excel in today’s game and share her own journey with you. Follow along as she progressively teaches you how to develop a big forehand and utilize that weapon to finish points at the net.
Meet your new instructor: 3-Time Grand Slam Champion, Lindsay Davenport. As the youngest of 3 siblings, she found the sport by accident but had an immediate love for the game.
Lindsay went to a regular school and they always put school first her family. Even after she turned pro, she was still going to a normal school. Making career decisions at 16 years old wasn't easy, but she figured out a way to handle it.
Lindsay contemplates officially turning pro before Indian Wells. She was 16 years old and had to announce if she was turning pro before the tournament started. Find out what happens next.
20 years old and representing the USA in the olympics was a dream come true for Lindsay. Just being there was a great experience, but winning it gave her a new found confidence.
1998 was an incredible year for Lindsay. Even though she was only 22, she was looked at as being "the best player without a slam". This was a title she was determined to get rid of.
After winning the US Open, Lindsay and Martina Hingis were in the race for the #1 ranking. What does it feel like to be #1? Lindsay tells us what was going through her mind when she captured the ranking.
The slam she never could image winning. Wimbledon. Lindsay worked hard to be able to give herself a real chance at going deep into the tournament. After a crazy tournament filled with rain delays, Lindsay beats Steffi Graf in and overwhelmingly emotional win.
Although it is "trendy" for players to stop playing doubles, Lindsay loved to play doubles. She loved being on the court with someone else. Having that camaraderie with another person is something that you don't get often on the pro tour.
What would Lindsay tell a younger version of herself? Learn from her experiences and see how she can help you.
Learn how to develop a big, powerful forehand. Hit the ball from baseline to baseline with good acceleration with a lot of power. This a quick drill that will make you hit a lot of balls in a short time and help you generate a lot of speed.
Once you've mastered the acceleration part of the forehand, it's time to move on to the footwork. Quick little steps to get into position to hit the ball in front is a skill that is extremely important.
This drill helps one of Lindsay's biggest pet peeves; seeing players wait for short balls. As soon as you recognize your opponent hit short, you have to get up to the ball and make contact while it is still above the net so you can hit down on the ball.
One huge aspect in today's game is the ability to finish points up at net. This is a skill that you should look to master. But it is a skill that takes work and discipline. See your opponent go to a slice grip? Time to move forward and put away the ball.
Playing people that hit hard are always tough to beat. How do you keep your opponent back at the baseline? Keep the ball deep and through the middle so there is no angle to neutralize them.
